ILUMA i One is the entry point to the i generation. It keeps the all-in-one format of the original ILUMA One, then adds the two features people actually notice: Autostart and FlexPuff.

One body, one cap, nothing to assemble and no pocket charger to carry. It remains the simplest device Philip Morris makes.

• Black — Midnight Black. Deep matte, hides fingerprints, the biggest seller.
• Blue — Breeze Blue. Soft pale blue that reads almost grey in low light.
• Green — Leaf Green. Mid-toned natural green, the more restrained of the two bold options.
• Brown — Vivid Terracotta. Burnt clay with more orange in it than the name suggests.

What the i generation adds

Autostart. Insert a Terea stick and heating begins on its own. Remove the used stick and the device switches off. No button press at either end.

FlexPuff. The device reads your puffing rhythm and, on a slower pace, extends the session by up to four extra puffs inside the same six minute window.

A bigger battery. 2700 mAh against 1728 on the original ILUMA One, in the same pocket-sized body.

Four-light status strip. Shows charge level and heating progress, pulsing while charging and turning solid white at full.

Being accurate about FlexPuff

This is the headline feature of the i range and it is widely oversold, so worth stating plainly.

FlexPuff does not activate every time. Whether it triggers, and how many extra puffs you get, depends entirely on how you personally smoke. Some people see it regularly, others rarely.

Philip Morris words it carefully for that reason, and so do we. Buy this device for Autostart and the larger battery, and treat the extra puffs as a bonus when they happen rather than a guaranteed eighteen per stick.

What it does not have

No touchscreen. That is fitted to ILUMA i Standard and i Prime only. Listings claiming otherwise are copying range-level marketing that does not apply to this model.

No pocket charger. Twenty uses, then it needs a plug for ninety minutes. A two-piece device tops the holder up between sessions instead.

No three consecutive sessions. The larger i models manage three back to back. This one heats one stick at a time.

Who should buy it

• You smoke twenty sticks a day or fewer — one charge covers it comfortably.
• You want one object, not two — nothing to assemble and nothing to leave behind.
• Autostart appeals — this is the cheapest device in the whole IQOS lineup that has it.
• You move around all day — it is the most pocketable device in the i range by a distance.

Buy something else if you smoke more than twenty a day, or if a touchscreen and Pause mode sound like things you would use rather than features on a list.

ILUMA i One or the original ILUMA One

Same format, same twenty uses, same ninety minute charge. What separates them is Autostart, FlexPuff and a battery over fifty percent larger.

The larger battery does not buy more sticks. Both are rated at twenty. What it buys is headroom, so that twenty holds up better as the cell ages.

Buy the original ILUMA One if you want the format at the lowest price and can live with pressing a button. Buy this if Autostart is worth the difference to you, which for most daily smokers it is.

Which sticks it takes

ILUMA i One works only with TEREA sticks. It will not heat Heets or any blade-device stick, because there is no blade inside it. This is the most common reason an order goes wrong, so check before you buy.
